Introducing SCS speaker Moonbeom Park

If you believe the news, North Korea is behind half of the bigger cyber attacks happening around the globe these days. That is probably exaggerated, but there is no doubt that the attack capabilities of this unique nation state exceed its economic power by far.

There is an exotic fascination with North Korea and its attacks in our part of the world. Yet it is very rare to get first hand experience from people who actually faced North Korean cyber-attackers. So we started to search for a qualified speaker to cover this subject. And where would you find such a speaker if not in South Korea?

So it is with a great pleasure that we announce Moonbeom Park from one of the bigger cert organizations in South Korea. Moonbeom specializes in research on North Korean cyber campaigns and has many years of experience with this endeavor. He is joined on stage by Tyler Choi, an expert in countering cyber infringements for another South Korean cert organisation. (By request of Tyler Choi, we are not using his real Korean name).

The talk will explain several attack cases and describe the organizational units of the North Korean cyber warfare system. Moonbeom and his partner will name and explain the command structure of the organization. They will give you insight into the methods usually employed in the different steps along the kill chain. The North Korean cyber units all use similar attack vectors, tools and malware but there are differences depending on the unit’s goal, be it to infiltrate the South Korean government, gain access to critical infrastructure or just attacks for financial gain to bring money back home.

Moonbeom is advisor for the national police agency, a mentor of South Korea’s Best of the Best program to develop the next generation of security leaders and a long time member of Asian underground WOWHACKER group.
